D'Alembert
The Balanced Progression
How It Works
Named after the French mathematician Jean le Rond d'Alembert, this system is based on the theory of equilibrium — the idea that wins and losses should eventually balance out. After a loss, you increase your bet by one unit. After a win, you decrease your bet by one unit. This creates a much gentler progression curve than Martingale or Fibonacci.
Example Sequence (Base unit = $10)
Starting bankroll: $1,000 | Base bet: $10
Spin 1: Loss (-$10) → Next bet: $20
Spin 2: Loss (-$20) → Next bet: $30
Spin 3: Loss (-$30) → Next bet: $40
Spin 4: Win (+$40) → Next bet: $30
Spin 5: Win (+$30) → Next bet: $20
Net result after 5 spins: -$10 (much gentler than Martingale -$150).
Advantages
- Linear, not exponential, bet progression
- Lowest risk among major progression systems
- Easy to calculate: +1 on loss, -1 on win
- Longer sessions before bankroll depletion
- More sustainable psychologically
Disadvantages
- Slower recovery from extended losses
- Still negative expected value overall
- Prolonged sessions with little profit
- Can reach table limits on long runs
Mathematical Analysis
The D'Alembert is often recommended as a safer alternative to Martingale, and mathematically this is correct — the linear progression means you won't face the exponential bet growth that characterizes Martingale. However, it still cannot overcome the house edge. The system works best in short sessions with strict stop-loss limits. The key advantage is psychological: the gentler progression allows for more disciplined bankroll management and reduces the emotional impact of losses.
When to Use D'Alembert
D'Alembert is best suited for players who want a methodical, low-pressure betting system for extended play sessions. It is particularly effective on even-money bets (red/black, odd/even, 1-18/19-36) in European roulette where the house edge is only 2.70%. Set a modest win target (10-20 units) and a strict stop-loss (20-30 units) before starting.
