Martingale

The Classic Doubling System

How It Works

The Martingale system is the simplest and most famous betting progression in casino history. The rules are straightforward: after every loss, you double your bet. After a win, you reset to your original base bet. The theory is that when you eventually win, you recover all previous losses plus a profit equal to your original bet.

Example Sequence

Starting bankroll: $1,000 | Base bet: $10

Spin 1: Loss (-$10) → Next bet: $20

Spin 2: Loss (-$20) → Next bet: $40

Spin 3: Loss (-$40) → Next bet: $80

Spin 4: Win (+$80) → Net profit: $10 | Reset to $10

Total risked: $150. Total recovered: $160. Profit: $10.

Advantages

  • Simple to understand and execute
  • Frequent small wins feel rewarding
  • Short-term profit is highly probable
  • Works well with even-money bets

Disadvantages

  • Exponential bet growth on losing streaks
  • 6 consecutive losses: bet jumps to $640
  • Table limits prevent recovery
  • Limited bankroll makes long streaks fatal

The Mathematical Truth

The Martingale system cannot overcome the house edge. While short-term winning sessions are common, the expected value remains negative. A losing streak of 8-10 consecutive losses (which occurs with roughly 0.4% probability on each sequence of 10 even-money bets) can wipe out months of small profits. The risk of ruin far exceeds the potential reward when viewed mathematically.

Probability of Loss Streaks (European Roulette, even-money bets)

4 losses in a row: 1 in 16 sequences (6.3%)

6 losses in a row: 1 in 64 sequences (1.6%)

8 losses in a row: 1 in 256 sequences (0.4%)

10 losses in a row: 1 in 1,024 sequences (0.1%)

With a $10 base bet, 10 losses = $10,230 total risk.
